The 11th annual Minerals Education Conference will be held June 17-20,2002 in Charlotte, NC. John Dysart, manager of the Reed Gold Mine State Historic Site, is the conference chair. Conference attendees will have the opportunity to tour the historic Reed Gold Mine, the site of the country's first gold discovery, and to pan for gold. Exhibits wig he shown at the Wingate Inn. And sessions will be held at Lowe's Motor Speedway. Three field trips will also he offered to conference attendees. The Minerals Education Coalition (MEC), sponsor of the conference, is a loosely knit group comprised of SME members, the National Mining Association, state and regional mining groups, government agencies, industry participants, educators and academia. The coalition sponsors the conference each year to provide the opportunity for mining professionals to exchange ideas on mineral education programs for students in kindergarten through 12th grade.
