Acid-rock drainage (ARD) can appear when construction operations or physical and chemical weathering expose sulfide-bearing rocks. When ARD develops during mining, it may become an expensive environmental liability, persisting for hundreds of years. The Acid Drainage Technology Initiative (ADTI) is an independent professional organization formed in 1995. It seeks to identify, develop and disseminate better technical solutions to ARD. The organization consists of members from the mining industry, government, academia, consulting firms and others involved in mine and mineral-related, drainage-quality management. Through a consensus process that considers the varied perspectives and missions of its membership, ADTI promotes sound science and brings informed technical experience to address ARD.
