Pennsylvania is forming a nine-member special commission to probe the causes of the Quecreek coal mine accident. Governor Mark Schweiker named Raja V. Ramani (SME), professor emeritus of mining and geoenvironmental engineering at The Pennsylvania State University, to head the group. The commission will include representatives of the United Mine Workers, mine engineers and surveyors, mine safety, health and rescue officials. It will also include coal mine operators and officials from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection and the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration. "An inquiry completed with thoroughness and urgency can be an effective means to help make mining more safe in the future," Ramani said.
