Ubterest in professional ethics has become more intense and widespread in recent years due to the highly publicized scandals in politics,research, engineering,etc. The scandals once again reveal that the knowledge to discern the right conduct from the wrong is fundamental and to practice that which is right is the only way. Several professional societies have codes of ethics, codes of conduct or guides for professional conduct. Some of the soceties have developed these codes only recently. Others have had a long history with their codes. These codes emphasize the importance of exercising morality and professional responsibility, honesty,integrity,loyalty,candor,trust-worthiness. honor, professional conduct and high standards of business ethics. Some societies' codes define the kind of relationships that member must have with the public, other employees, clients, associates and students. Other codes include upholding societies' reputations and the need for membership dedication to improve competence, service and the exercise of well-founded judgments. Several codes identify concern for human welfare and for public health and safety. Finally, some codes suggest disciplinary measures for violating standards. Mining is one of the oldest professions. Therefore, one would expect longstanding, successful approaches for guiding the profession. In fact, two passages from De Re Metallica illustrate this heritage. Agricola states that metals should not be dug up at all if such things (injuries and deaths) were to happen very frequently to miners or if they could not be safely guarded by any means from such risks.
