Echo Bay Mines paid 5 million C dollars to acquire a 8.9 percent interest in the Philippines' TVI Pacific mining company. The acquisitin is part of a strategic alliance and joint venture through which Echo Bay may acquire 50 percent of TVI's interests in several gold properties in the TVI is currently exploring 15 projects in the Philippines that total more than 10,000 km~2 (2.47 million acres). TVI will explore and develop these and other projects through the prefeasibility stage. Echo Bay can acquire a 50 percent interest in any or all of TVI's current and future properties except for two present projects, Canatuan and Rapu Rapu. Echo Bay can also become the operator of the projects and develop them from feasibility through commercial production. To exercise its option, Echo Bay will make a cash contribution to the property joint venture equal to that already spent on that property. The company will also make a cash payment to TVI equal to 50 percent of that amount.
