Homestake Mining and Navan Resources, an Irish company with mineral interests in Europe, reached an agreement that allows Homestake to acquire an interest in the Chelopech gold-copper operations located 70 km (45 miles) cast of Sofia, Bulgaria. Initially, Homestake will buy a 10 percent interest for 24 million dollars in Navan shares. Navan invest 12 million dollars of the proceeds in the Chelopech operation. The agreement also gives Homestake an option to buy 50 percent of Navan's wholly owned subsidiary, which currently owns a 68 percent indirect interest in the Chelopech operation. If the option is exercised, Homestake will invest 48 million dollars in the Navan subsidiary, which would be invested in Chelopech. The Chelopech underground mine produced about 21.7 t (700,000 oz) of gold from 1957 until 1990. The operation was then closed because Bulgarian smelters could not treat the mine's arsenic-bearing concentrates in an environmentally acceptable manner.
