Geologic mapping is fundamental to the exploration process, yet it lags behind almost all other areas of geo-logical science in technical innovation Mining companies have not evolved sufficuebtkt in this area. They are willing to spend thousands of dollars on a drill hole but very little to advanrr the techniques for the inexpensive 2-dimensional (or 2 l/2dimen-sional) picture that mapping reveals. I am a consulting geologic mapper and mapping represents about half of my income. I produced my first geologic map in 1968. Yet it amazes me how little the techniques of mapping have changed through the years. Just give me a Brunton compass, altimeter, rock pick, hand lens, some pencils and a base map, and I am set to go. However, I do not go very fast. When conditions are excellent, when I know the rocks and the geology is not too complex, I can map a square mile at a scale of 25 mm =122 or 150 m (1 in. = 400 or 500 ft) in four days. I consider this cruising. Usually I map more slowly. Many geologists will say they can map faster than this, but I am not impressed. In ail mapping there is a trade-off between the amount of ground covered and the time spent actually examining the rocks. Each mapper must decide what level of accuracy and detail he wishes the map to contain. There are no guidelines in this area. Over the years I have established my own standard, hopefully a high one, and no amount of criticism will budge me from this standard in the interests of faster mapping.
