Many SME members, and the SME Board of Directors, have advocated that the organization reach out to the political world and public-leader-ship circles. Soon, SME sections may have that chance.At the February 2002 meeting in Phoenix, SME members will be asked to ratify an action by the board of directors and establish a nonvoting membership category, Informational Associate. The Adopt-a-Leader program would then be available to local sections in March 2002. The purpose of the program is three fold:· Increase opportunities to share SME's information with public leaders usingMining Engineering as the primary vehicle,· Energize SME local sections with a proactive outreach program and· Rejuvenate interest in membership in SME.
