We certainly are at an interesting crossroads. The world is afire with antiterrorist sentiment and uncertainty. And we are once again asked to look into our crystal balls and forecast an unpredictable future. If the answers were easy, they would also be obvious. But this world is complex. So the true path is not easy to discern.Most people consider Terrible Tuesday as the beginning of the end. However, remember the "greatest economic boom in history of man" in the years that immediately preceded the Sept.11 attacks. This was a decade-long paper economy. It was built on irrational speculation and investment in the dot.com's future, betting on the role of the new Internet economy, and embracing the excessively aggressive accounting practices of Fortune 500 companies. These actions led to the blind belief that the Dow Jones Industrial Average served as a proxy for the health of the US economy.
