The price of nickel has increased to more than 3 US dollars/lb in recent months. It has reached 10-month highs on the back of improved global economic prospects. According to AME Mineral Economics, nickel has seen price rises of more than 55 percent in a little more than five months. Large producers, such as Norilsk Nickel, Inco, Falconbridge, BHP Billiton, WMC and Eramet, are all taking advantage of the market recovery to boost earnings levels that suffered in 2001's price tumble. However, Australia's high-pressure acid leach (HPAL) laterite operations have still failed to live up to expectations. These projects include the Murrin Murrin, Bulong and Cawse mines. The estimated average cash costs of nickel production fell 3 percent in 2001 to 1.88 US dollars/lb. This was mostly due to the high prices received for platinum group metal byproducts and the improving (although still high-cost) performance of the Western Australia HPAL plants.
