Arizona's mining industry ended 2001 with mixed results. The good news was that the state's growing population and expanding transportation infrastructure continued to increase the demand for sand, gavel, crushed stone and cement. The bad news was that Arizona's largest and most important mining segment - the copper industry - was negatively impacted by concerns about energy supplies. And the copper sector was hit especially hard by low prices. Arizona's copper industry contracted significantly during 2001. The industry struggled to survive near-record-low copper prices (in constant dollars), growing commodity warehouse inventories resulting from the slow global economy and the US recession, the tight regional energy market and the impacts to consumption from the events of Sept. 11.
