Coal mining in western Pennsylvania played a key role in the Industrial Revolution and in two world wars. It continues to provide more than half of the Commonwealth's electricity. Only about 1 percent of recent mining operations that used environmentally sound methods have drainage problems. but historical activities have created a legacy of severe environmental and safety problems. By 1950, many communities that provided metallurgical-grade coal fro the steel industry disappeared. They were replaced by scarred landscapes characterized by dangerous highwalls, barren coal-refuse piles and spoil and orange-colored discharges.
