Coal mining on Arizona's Black Mesa Mine injected more than 110 million dollars in economic benefits into Navajo and Hopi communities during 2001. In the 30 years the Peabody Energy mines have operated, more than 2 billion dollars in economic benefits to the region have been generated, the company reported. The results include the impact of coal and water royalties, taxes, wages, benefits and tribal scholarships generated by the Black Mesa and Kayenta mines. The Black Mesa and Kayenta mines are operated through lease agreements with the Navajo and the Hopi tribes. The mines produce more than 12 Mt/a (13 million stpy) of low sulfur coal. The coal is shipped to the Mohave generating station near Laughlin, NV, and the Navajo generating station near Page, AZ. Together, these electricity generating stations provide low-cost electricity for more than 3.5 million homes in Arizona, Nevada and California.
