A Colorado congressman has proposed legislation that would restrict releasing water from coalbed methane wells into rivers and streams. Rep. Mark Udall (D-CO) said his measure was in response to a Montana judge's ruling that waste water pumped out of the ground with coalbed methane in it is not regulated under the federal Clean Water Act. "If you have water you are bringing up from coal beds, you have sodium and arsenic and acidity," Udall said. "Common sense says that is not just water."
