Platinum and palladium demand and prices continued to move in opposite directions in 2002. And platinum's price is expected to remain strong while palladium's price will remain weak despite a recovery in demand, according to a report by Johnson Matthey (JM). Demand for platinum grew by 5 percent to a new high of 203.4 t (6.54 million oz) during 2002. This increase was driven by another year of strong sales to the Chinese jewelry market and by greater use in autocatalysts. Platinum supplies, though, failed to keep pace. They rose by less than 2 percent to 185.7 t (5.97 million oz). As a result, the deficit between platinum supply and demand widened to 17.7 t (570,000 oz). The platinum price responded by increasing from 15.46 dollars/g (481 dollars/oz) at the start of 2002 to 19.50 dollars/g (607 dollars/oz) in December. It then reached a 23-year high of 22.66 dollars/g (705 dollars/oz) in March 2003.
