Will geophysical technologies return to U.S. coal fields?

Coal geophysics was once the exclusive domain of a major U.S. coal company that learned how to use its power to gather lots of valuable subsurface data before making major commitments. This is no longer the case and the playing field is now level for any coal company willing to adopt it. Properly adopting leading edge "upstream and downstream" technologies will be the key factors that will determine the survival and profitability of U.S. coal companies, especially in this highly-competitive fuels market. This article presented case studies where the surface seismic reflection method was successfully used to detect and map different structural geologic anomalies (faults, washouts, roll and mine works). It was based on 1980s technologies. However, geophysical technologies have advanced further since the 1990s and employing them would result in better qualitative and quantitative results. The author believes geophysical technologies will never replace drilling because drillhole data is needed to QC and calibrate the geophysical data, as they are complementary. At times it would be necessary to drill some post-survey holes to verify interpretations. Will geophysical technologies return to U.S. coal fields? The author believes, yes, it is slowly returning. The Internet technology has provided worldwide access to anyone interested in gaining knowledge and information in the public domain. What was once inaccessible is now accessible. The technology that could address your problem is likely out there. You just need to search and find it. So companies that ignore or fail to adopt such innovative leading-edge upstream geophysical technologies are inviting additional risks to mine safety and productivity that could adversely affect their bottom lines.
