Peabody Energy is buying a 30-' percent interest in Econo-Power International (EPIC). It owns and markets modular coal gasifiers for industrial applications. Peabody Energy, the world's largest private-sector coal producer, said it will invest up to 6 million dollars for its 30 percent interest in EPIC. The company will also help market EPIC's coal gasification technology. Peabody Energy said it believes that Btu conversion technologies that turn coal into natural gas, transportation fuels and hydrogen are expanding coal's traditional markets beyond electricity generation and steelmaking.
