Mongolia. Nomadic tribes-men. Yaks and yurts. That is what many people think, if they think of the country at all. Au contraire. Mining is Mongolia's largest industry. Mining is responsible for 17 percent of the country's gross domestic product, 65 percent of its industrial output and 57 percent of its export earnings. Mongolia's Ministry of Industry and Trade reports some 6,000 mineral occurrences of metals and minerals. There are more than 5,200 exploration and mining licenses in effect. These cover 40 million hm~2 (100 million acres), about 26 percent of Mongolia.
