Demand for platinum and palladium was projected to improve and both metals should see firm prices, according to a report by Johnson Matthey. Platinum demand was expected to rise by 3.7 t (120,000 oz) to 208.7 t (6.71 million oz) during 2005, a new high. This would exceed mine supply for the seventh year in a row. Palladium demand was expected to grow by 12.7 t (410,000 oz) to 214.3 t (6.89 million oz). And, with Russian supply expected to fall, the palladium market surplus will be significantly reduced. Platinum demand from the automobile sector was projected to climb by 9.3 t (300,000 oz) to 120 t (3.86 million oz). This was mainly due to growing demand for platinum autocatalysts for diesel cars and trucks in Europe, Japan and the United States.
