The U.S. coal industry is predicting another record year for production in 2006. According the National Mining Association's (NMA) Coal Producer Survey, 53 percent of the coal executives contacted expect 2006 production to be higher than the 1.02 Gt (1.13 billion st) produced in 2005. Twenty-eight percent believe production will remain at about the same level as in 2005. No one expects production to be lower. Last year's production record was about 19.2 Mt (21.2 million st) higher than in 2005 and about 5.1 Mt (5.6 million st) more than the previous record set in 2001. "The findings reflect the continuing importance of coal for a steadily growing, technology-driven economy," said Kraig R. Naasz, NMA's president and chief executive officer.
