The Mesquite gold mine in Imperial County, CA could be revived by Western Gold-fields with the help of a 21,336-m (70,000-ft) drilling program. Its aim is to expand the resource base of the past producing mine. In 1985, the mine was put in production as an openpit, heap-leach mine. Newmont Mining acquired the mine and put a hold on expansion plans in 2001, a time of low gold prices. Western Goldflelds acquired the property and related permits that had been obtained by the senior producer in 2002. The company has since continued residual leaching. 2006 production is projected to be at about 435 kg (14,000 oz).
