Fred H. Brooks died Sept. 1, i 2006 in Wheat Ridge, CO after a brief illness. He was 81. Born Jan. 5,1925 in Chicago, IL, he was raised in El Paso, TX. He completed his metallurgical engineering degree in 1947 at the Texas Western College of Mines and Metallurgy (now the University of Texas, El Paso). He began his career at Cominco in Trail, BC Canada. There, he met and courted his wife, Ethel "Billie" Wadds. Brooks was a registered professional engineer and for most of his career worked as a mining engineer. But he was also a teacher at heart. Beginning in 1951, Brooks worked on the hill at the Climax molybdenum mine. In 1954, he moved into the newly formed Climax Exploration division in Denver, CO. In 1956, he moved to the Uranium Division in Grand Junction, CO. There, he spent 11 years managing uramum-mmmg operations on the Colorado Plateau and an open-pit operation in Karnes County, TX.
