FESI completed the construction of the Pride of the West stope cover on Oct. 25, 2005 with a crew varying from four to nine people. There were no Occupational Safety and Health Administration-recordable or lost-time injuries. The cover will prevent the infiltration of surface waters, snow and avalanche deposits into the stope that accounts for most of the metals laden discharge from the lower mine adit. Backcountry enthusiasts that frequent the slopes around Silverton year-round will be protected from falls into the now protected openings. William Simon with ARSG said that when the estimated 122 to 183 m (400 to 600 ft) of vertical ice depos-its under the cover have melted and discharged from the portal, the mine will be re-entered to plug any flowing 1 diamond drill holes. I It is anticipated that future reductions in metals loading from the Pride I of the West Mine will improve water quality in Cunningham Creek, increase aquatic life and fishery productivity, and I ultimately enhance the Animas River watershed.
