Oxiana said that it has begun stripping and site construction work at its proposed Prominent Hill copper-gold project in South Australia. The 775-mil-lion A dollars project is expected to go into production in September 2008 with full production being reached in December 2008. The Prominent Hill Mine would produce about 104 kt/a (114,600 stpy) of copper-in-concentrate during its first four years of production, the company said. That would be due to the higher grades encountered during the proposed mine's early years. After that, production would be 71 kt/a (78,000 stpy). Gold production would average 3.57 t/a (115,000 oz/year) during the mine's life. Oxiana estimated cash operating costs at the Prominent Hill Mine to be US73 cents/lb of copper. That is net of byproduct credits, assuming 14.58 US dollars /g (500 US dollars /oz) gold and US23 cents/g (8 dollars /oz) silver prices.
