Continued progress in terms of LW face operational efficiency is anticipated, although LW mine productivity may remain in its present flat plateau. Boyd anticipates, based on expected coal production requirements, that LW mine output will increase to record levels during the next five years. And it will account for an even larger portion of U.S. underground output. The long decline in the U.S. LW face census is expected to end with a modest upturn in face numbers by the end of the decade. Development of thin-seam LW technology will continue to be an industry priority. And that is likely to be constrained. Despite operating profit margins that are favorable to new mine development, the outlook for greenfield LW projects is limited. Boyd projects five new greenfield LW projects by 2010.
