West Virginia state investigators were prepared to issue a report stating that a lightning strike sparked the methane gas explosion inside the Sago Mine, where 12 coal miners died on Jan. 2, 2006. However, the release of that report was postponed after West Virginia Gov. Joe Manchin met with families who raised questions and requested additional information. Major questions arose after state investigators could not determine the route the electrical current from a lighting strike would have travelled to have caused the explosion in the sealed off, underground section of the mine.
