The decision to take the li-censure examination is one of the most important that a young practicing engineer can make to enhance both personal and professional career opportunities. In addition to revealing a personal commitment to professional practice and earning the respect of employers, customers and peers, professional licensing opens up a new vista of opportunities for promotion and consulting. It is well known that greater emphasis is placed on professional registration in certain engineering disciplines than in others. Civil engineering accounts for approximately 50 to 60 percent of all professional registration. More than 60 percent of the American Society of Civil Engineer's members, not including students, are registered professional engineers. While comparative numbers for mining/mineral engineering and mining engineers are not readily available, it is generally true that professional licensure is not widely sought by engineers working in the minerals industry.
