Rio Tinto reported more than 162 Mt (179 million st) of lateritic nickel resources at its Sulawesi nickel project in Indonesia. The find will strengthen Rio Tinto's standing there as will the company's announcement of its plans for additional exploration that could lead to to further mineralization discoveries. "Sulawesi Nickel has been confirmed as a tier one opportunity for our group," said chief executive of Rio Tinto Copper, Bret Clayton. "This shows a substantial resource and we believe that there is significant potential to find further resources through our exploration efforts," he said. "This project will provide an attractive entry for Rio Tinto into a new metal and in 10 years' time, Rio Tinto could rank among the top 10 nickel producers globally."
