摘要

2007 mine production of domestic barite decreased by about 8 percent from 2006. Canada imported some barite from China in 2007 that, in previous years, had come from Nevada. Domestic consumption increased by 6 percent for the same period. Baker Hughes, Halli-burton (Baroid) and MI Swaco operate three mines in Nevada that produce the majority of barite mined do-mestically. The same three companies operate grind-ing plants in Nevada and the Gulf Coast. Newpark Drilling Fluids also has grinding plants on the Gulf Coast along with several small grinding plants that toll some barite. Most of the barite used on the Gulf Coast comes from China and India.Spirit Drilling Fluids brought online a new grind-ing plant in Evanston, WY in mid-2007. The feed for the plant came from old stockpiles in Nevada along with some feed purchased from one of the major min-ers. Spirit's mine in Nevada should provide feed by mid-2008.Halliburton (Baroid), MI Swaco and Spirit Drilling Fluids are all producing drilling mud with a specific gravity of 4.1. Baker Hughes is planning to switch to 4.1 in 2008.
