ROBERT C. FREAS is senior vice president, sales and marketing, for Franklin Industrial Minerals in Nashville, TN. He joined Franklin in 1985 as vice president of marketing and was promoted to his current position in 1993. Prior to joining Franklin, Freas was director of operations for Limestone Products, a division of Penn-Virginia. He also served as director of research and corporate development. During the 1970s, Freas was chief geologist for Dravo Lime and a technical advisor to the Electric Power Research Institute. While at Dravo, he played a major part in developing and bringing online Dravo's underground limestone operations and lime plant at Maysville, KY, Prior to this project, Freas had been an engineering geologist specializing in soil and rock mechanics, slope stability analysis and mine-subsidence problems. Freas received a B.S. in geology from Baldwin-Wallace College in 1962 and an M.S. in geology from Miami University. Twenty years later, he received an M.B.A. from Rutgers University.In 1986, Freas chaired the Industrial minerals Division. He also spent two terms as chair of the GEM Committee and was chair of the Mining Engineering Committee and the Membership Committee and the Membership Committee. In 1991-92, Freas served as SME's vice president of Finance. Freas recently coauthored three chapters for Industrial Minerals and Rocks, Sixth Edition.
