As I close out my presidential year, I have been reflecting on the most critical issues facing the society. My conclusion is that the two most important goals are the development of our Internet capabilities and the expansion of our membership base. The two are closely tied. We will continue our traditional high-quality meetings, publications and short courses. But we must develop "best practice" capabilities for all our electronic communications, especially the Internet.E-membership is expected to attract more international members. And this will help to fulfill the worldwide target of our mission statement and long-term strategy. All aspects of the Strategic Plan can be advanced or achieved through expansion of our Internet capabilities. This will determine SME's future in the competitive international market. The Internet's importance as a communication tool will grow substantially over the next several years as information is increasingly exchanged electronically. I expect the Internet to have a large role in SME being able to fulfil the needs of members and to expand the membership base. We will be able to deliver more information to more members efficiently and economically. SEM will be able to e-publish new books and journal articles for easy, online, access. SME will be able to provide online sort courses for long-distance learning and professional development. If we can ensure that appropriate information is easily available through the SME Web site, the value of membership will be substantially increased for existing and potential new members.
