MICHAEL A. TREVITS is a research physical scientist with the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Pittsburgh Research Laboratory in Pittsburgh, PA. He is currently a senior-level researcher in the Disaster Prevention and Response branch. Trevits has a B.S. degree in geology and an M.B.A. from the University of Pittsburgh. He is a registered professional geologist in North Carolina. Trevits began his career in 1974 with the US Bureau of Mines (USBM). Through 1982, he conducted research into the factors controlling the release, migration and capture of coalbed methane. He served as a supervisory geologist from 1982-98 under NIOSH and the USBM. He was responsible for applied and basic research programs in the areas of methane control, extended-cut mining, sudden catastrophic ground failures and mining-induced subsidence.
