Productivity improvement and cost containment are important baselines for any mining operation to compete in the US coal market of the 1990s. At Coteau Properties Co.'s Freedom mine productivity has been the byword on which the entire success of the mine has been built. t requires a mine culture that does not fear taking a chance on new equipment, allows its employees to test new methods and pushes for standards to accurately evaluate and test new ideas, oteau is recognized nationally and internationally as an innovator of new technology and as a test bed for new types of equipment. he attention given to accurate cost recording and equipment history tracking, along with the concern by all employees to fairly and accurately evaluate new ideas, has given Coteau this recognition. t is also the reason Coteau has grown in size to stand alongside the Powder River Basin giants even though Coteau must move three times the overburden and deliver a coal with 25 percent less heating value. hese past successes and future challenges represent a proud accomplishment for every member of The Coteau Properties Co.
