The US Bureau of Mines (USBM) completed a mineral L resource assessment of the 68,000-km~2 (17 million-acre) Colville mining district and the southern portion of the National Petroleum Reserve in Alaska. This is one of a series of assessments conducted by the agency on federal, state and native lands in Alaska and took four years to complete. The district lies on the north side of the Brooks Range, 465 km (290 miles) northwest of Fairbanks and 275 km (170 miles) southwest of the Prudhoe Bay oil field. During the study, a series of sedimentary phosphate occurrences were evaluated. These consisted of phosphate-bearing oolitic, shaley limestone and mudstone beds, concentrated in the Upper Mississippian Lisburne group and to a lesser extent the Triassic Otuk formation. Phosphate-bearing rocks were traced intermittently along an east-west trend for at least 232 km (144 miles) across the northern foothills of the Brooks Range. The phosphatic beds have dips ranging from 30 deg to near vertical. They are best exposed in a monoclinal structure.
