In 1993, SME began developing a long-range strategic planforthe Society. MINING ENGINEERING publishedthat plan and reported on its progress throughout the 1993 program year. Implementation of the strategic plan began in 1994. As part of that, a working party was appointed to review SME's organizational structure. Brij Moudgil is chairman of the working party. Its members include Barbara Arnold, George Austin, Dave Fagin and Bob Schenk, along with staff members Gary Howell and Helga Grunerud. As this committee performed its task, the following goals were the guiding spirit of its deliberations: centre dot Organize to support objectives established by the strategic plan. centre dot Establish a more democratic governance of the Society with the membership having the opportunity to participate more in its governance, programming and other Society functions. centre dot Implement a more flexible Society structure to accommodate member involvement in the governance and other functions based on member interest and limited time commitment and yet provide continuity in the policy-making affairs of SME. centre dot Provide flexibility in technical programming to organize topical symposia in a timely manner and encourage more collaboration and information exchange among divisions on related common-interest topics. centre dot Enhance the SME membership base. Provide a home for nonmineral-related and business professionals within SME.
