Large-blade dozers improve coal mine productivity

Pen Coal operates four coal mines in West Virginia. These mines are smaller, compared with other mines in the region. So, instead of using large draglines to mine coal, Pen Coal uses large-blade dozers. Pen Coal's Kiah Creek Mine uses two Komatsu Mining Systems' D575A Super Dozers, equipped with the company's 68-m~3 (90-cu yd) Super Dozer blades. With such large capacity, the Super Blade offers 15 percent more productivity than a same size standard blade. Operators recognize up to 30 percent more productivity in uphill pushes as well. And a range of automated backward and forward movement through three positions - dig, carry and dump - enables operators to speed their cycles and move additional material on every shift. The blade design also allows the operator to position it at the desired level for optimum digging action. And, once the cut has been made, he continues to adjust the blade position as needed. When the carry cycle begins, a lock-up torque converter automatically engages. This provides increased power to ground and more pushes per shift.
