摘要

Coal, limestone, sandstone, clay and other nonfuel minerals are mined in West Virginia. However, coal dominates the mining industry by an order of magnitude. Limestone production totaled 14.7 Mt (16.2 million st) in 2000 and accounts for about 90 percent of nonfuel mineral production. It is anticipated that limestone production will increase in southern West Virginia and the eastern panhandle due to several major road construction initiatives. Most of this production comes from Ordovician, Silurian, Devonian and Mississippian rocks. Photo on next page shows the new Fairfax stone quarry in the Tonolway Limestone on the Grant-Hardy County line west of Moorefield. West Virginia's productive coal measures are all Pennsylvanian in age. The rocks were deposited in a single foreland basin that changed character significantly as time passed. Deposition began in the south under conditions where subsidence was rapid and coals and interseam rocks were well preserved.
