First of all, this article is not directed at the general public where a modicum of tact is required. This is a sermon directed to the choir - to the minerals industry itself. However, the tone of my little homily will be a function of how you react to the following statement. Sustainable development in the minerals industry is an oxymoron! Dramatic pause ... make that a very dramatic pause... Do you agree with the statement above and think sustainable development is just a bunch of worthless touchy-feely self-righteous do-gooderism #@! percent invented by academics, politicians and NGOs that do not like us? Then I think it best to borrow a little catch phrase adopted within Cleveland-Cliffs for those unwilling to accept change - "Get out of the way!" Oxymoron or not, the rest of the world has long since bought into the concept of sustainable development and all your sniveling will not change it. In other words, the sustainable development train has left the station. Hop on board or get run over!
