Mechanized cleaning of underground sumps for mines or concentrators

This paper discusses a methodology for removing accumulated sediments from mine and concentrator sumps. The equipment used is a floating barge, which is smaller but similar in operation to a harbor dredge. The barge is equipped with a controllable boom containing an agitator and a hydro-inductor. A significant effort was involved in applying a GE-1 hydro-inductor, which was originally designed for handling slurry materials, to this application. Water, pressurized to 0.4 to 0.6 MPa (58 to 87 psi), was supplied to the inlet chamber of the hydro-inductor and to the agitator. The resulting slurry was picked up and piped to a central settling pond. The system was capable of creating and transporting slurries containing up to 20 percent (by volume) solids. The apparatus was used for cleaning out six sumps of the Sheregesh Mine over a 3.5-month period. Total volume of slurry removed exceeded 12,000m~3 (420,000 cu ft).
