A Colorado legislative committee killed a bill that would have banned the use of cyanide in new mines in the state. State Sen. Ken Gordon, a Democrat from Denver, introduced the measure. It sought to ban cyanide's use in all heap leaching operations in the state. However, mining industry supporters believe it was aimed at AngloGold North America's Cresson Mine, near Cripple Creek. It is Colorado's only mine to use heap leaching methods. "As we get less and less water, we need to take care with the quality of the water we do have," Gordon said. However, mining industry representatives said the use of cyanide in mining is safe and Gordon's bill would have resulted in job losses in rural communities. "It is the wrong solution in search of a problem that does not exist," said Stuart Sanderson, president of the Colorado Mining Association.
