China's steel demand fuels iron ore growth

Expanding steel production in China is driving iron ore industry development, according to a report by AME Mineral Economics. The report also shows how ambitious steel sector development in India and Brazil, along with steel industry revitalization in Russia and other countries in transition, will further boost global demand growth. AME forecasts that annual world iron ore consumption will increase to more than 1.6 Gt (1.57 billion long tons) by 2009 from 1.3 Gt (1.28 billion long tons) this year. CVRD, Rio Tinto and BMP Billiton are the world's three largest iron ore producers. Between them, they control more than three-quarters of the seaborne iron ore trade. They have already put major expansion plans in place. And several other projects have been proposed in Australia, Brazil, India, Africa, and even Sweden and North America
