ABB offers complete electrical revamps of mining shovels with ac or dc drives, drive control, frequency converters with insular gate bipolar transistor technology, intelligent control packages and visualization. Many of the world's shovel excavators and draglines (walking excavators) were built in the 1980s. After 15 to 20 years of round-the clock operation in openpit mines, these machines start to feel their age. Electrical parts are particularly vulnerable. Their performance deteriorates and availability and productivity fall, fiven with regular service and maintenance, a machine of this age will accumulate 400 hours of unscheduled downtime a year. The need for a replacement becomes pressing, but the expense is often prohibitive.
