The U.S. cement industry experienced its best year ever during 2004 in terms of production and shipments of cement. Clinker, portland and masonry cements production and shipments were up considerably. Clinker production as reported to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) was 87.75 Mt (96.73 million st), an increase of 5.4 percent. Gray and white portland cement production from domestic and imported clinker was estimated to be 91.6 Mt (101 million st), up 5 Mt (5.5 million st) from 2003. Masonry cement shipments increased by 8.8 percent to 5.1 Mt (5.6 million st).That nearly equates to production. Blended cement shipments were up 16.7 percent to 1.7 Mt (2 million st) from 2003, Imported gray and white portland cement, based on data from the USGS and the U.S. Bureau of the Census, was 25 Mt (27.5 million st) up 16.8 percent. This imported cement quantity is 1.22 Mt (1.34 million st) more than reported shipments of imported cement to customers due to shipments of imported cement by brokers and concrete producers that are not reported to the USGS. The author estimates the total shipments to customers of gray portland cement, blended cement and masonry cement was 123.23 Mt (135.8 million st). This was a record and an increase of 7.1 Mt (7.8 million st), or 6.2 percent, from 2003. White portland cement production and shipments by U.S. producers was estimated to be 300 kt (330,000 st). Imports added an additional 1.19 Mt (1.31 million st).
