摘要

As we go to press, Hurricane Katrina, which struck Aug. 29, is estimated to have done more than 100 billion dollars in damage to New Orleans, LA and the surrounding area. And Hurricane Rita appeared to be headed toward the Gulf Coast of Texas. Oil, coal, lumber, chemicals and grain: Katrina hurt the commerce and transport of all of them in the lower Mississippi River and the Gulf of Mexico. More important was helping the Katrina victims. Individual, corporate and (more slowly) federal aid arrived. Money, food, clothing, water, equipment and manpower came from all over the United States.
