George Kempton Williams left the beauty and peace of Asheville, NC on Nov. 18. 2005 to enjoy God's greater peace. Williams was born on Bastille Day, July 14,1930, in Christians-berg, VA to Mary and Leroy Williams. In 1950, he married Joan Landreth. After serving in the U.S. Marine Corps, he earned B.S. and M.S. degrees in geology from Virginia Tech. He was a senior member of SME and a fellow of the Society of Economic Geology. Williams wrote several technical papers on model diapirs (1968), the U.S. gold industry (1984) and uranium (1995). He also wrote the bauxite annual review in 1969. Williams began his professional career in 1957 with Kaiser Aluminum and Chemical. He worked on various exploration programs in Mexico, Jamaica and the southeastern United States. He also participated in the discovery and evaluation of the remote Paranaquara bauxite deposit in Amazonia, Brazil. This experience could have served as a model in jungle hardship and adventure for The Lost World by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Substitute a bauxite deposit on the top of the mesa for the prehistoric monsters.
