A dispute between cooperative miners and mine workers over control of the Huanuni tin mine in Bolivia grabbed headlines around the world after it was reported that the groups fought each other by hurling sticks of dynamite, killing at least 12 and injuring dozens more. Fighting broke out on Oct. 5 when 4,000 cooperative miners dynamited an air compressor to force workers out of the tin deposit in an attempted takeover of the mine. The Huanuni workers responded with their own dynamite, sparking a battle that lasted for more than three hours. During that time, a dynamite store was blown up, causing a number of deaths and destroying 39 homes.
