Gypsum wallboard manufacturers in the United States shipped 2.85 Gm~2 (30.63 billion sq ft) of wall-board products in 2007 versus 3.46 Gm~2 (37.2 billion sq ft) in 2006. Shipments to the South Atlantic, West South Central and Pacific regions of the U.S. accounted for about 51 percent of the total wallboard shipments. Following historically high production of gypsum wall-board in 1999, production decreased in 2000, steadily in-creased from 2001 to 2005 and moderated during 2006. However, during 2007, gypsum wallboard shipments decreased by 17.7 percent.The total amount of gypsum consumed in the United States during 2007 was about 42.4 Mt (46.7 million st). Mining of natural gypsum amounted to 22 Mt (24.3 mil-lion st). Approximately 22 percent of the total gypsum demand, amounting to 9.3 Mt (10.3 million st), was sup-plied by synthetic gypsum. Manufacturing of gypsum wallboard and plaster products accounted for about 87 percent of the total gypsum consumed in 2007. About 3.5 Mt (3.9 million st) were used in portland cement production, a decrease from consumption in 2004 and 2005. Agricultural applications accounted for about 1.8 Mt (2 million st).
