The United States relies on imports for nearly all of the bauxite it consumes. Small amounts of bauxite and bauxitic clays are produced in Alabama, Arkansas and Georgia for nonmetallurgical uses.Metallurgical-grade (crude dry) bauxite imports in 2007 totaled 9.84 Mt (10.84 million st), 15 percent less than the quantity imported in 2006. The decline in im-ports likely was because of the temporary closure of Ormet's refinery at Burnside, LA at the end of 2006 that continued throughout 2007. Jamaica (45 percent), Guin-ea (20 percent) and Brazil (14 percent) were the leading suppliers to the United States in 2007.In 2007, 247 kt (272,300 st) of refractory-grade cal-cined bauxite was imported, a 42-percent increase, com-pared with 2006. The increase in imports may be the result of a 25-percent increase in U.S. exports of refrac-tory products made with bauxite, such as bricks and cru-cibles, which were then shipped to global steel producers. China (48 percent), Brazil (37 percent) and Guyana (15 percent) were the sources of refractory-grade calcined bauxite imports to the United States.
