摘要

The U.S. Department of Labor's Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) issued 1.85 million dollars in fines as a result of the Crandall Canyon Mine collapse in Emery County, UT that resulted in the death of six miners on Aug. 6, 2007. Three rescue workers were killed 10 days later because of another mine bump. The Department of Labor ruled that failures by the mine operator and the engineering consultant contributed to mine collapse and issued the fines on July 24. The mine's operator, Genwal Resources, which was criticized in one of the reports released by MSHA, was fined 1.34 million dollars for violations that directly contributed to the deaths of six miners. Agapito Associates Inc., a mining engineering consultant, was fined 220,000 dollars for faulty analysis of the mine's design. MSHA cited the mine operator for 11 additional, non-contributory violations issued as a result of the investigation. The proposed penalty for these violations is 296,664 dollars, bringing the total proposed penalties against the mine operator to 1,636,664 dollars. Crandall Canyon Mine is operated by Genwal Resources Inc., whose parent company is Murray Energy Corp.
