What would have been the largest merger ever of mining companies is no more. Amid the troubled global economy, falling commodity prices and stumbling stocks, BHP Billiton ended its pursuit of rival Rio Tinto. The merger that was proposed more than a year ago would have been worth an estimated 150 billion dollars. BHP spent a reported 450 million dollars on costs but pulled its all-share takeover bid on Nov. 25. The deal would have been worth about 68 billion dollars when it was abandoned.
